The talent of every era is here, giving us fabulous treasures that are not jealously hidden but are in full view for all to see.

Miraculously preserved from the ravages of time and the folly of men, who were sometimes quite destructive, the architectural, artistic and cultural heritage is so abundant in our department that it is often compared to a gigantic open-air museum.

There are over 500 military, civil or religious monuments and over 20 000 ancient, listed, major works of art out of nearly 150 000 pieces in all. That is without counting the collections in the Modern Art museum in Céret and the museum in Collioure, as well as the thousands of items discovered in Tautavel where the famous skull of a man who lived there about 450 000 years ago was found… These are just a few reasons to make many curators green with envy!

It is quite usual to find every level of human genius within the same zone: the first signs of skill are to be found in the incredible prehistoric tools; the first signs of ambition and science in the megalithic vestiges, the first signs of pride in the glory of Pompey, the Domitian way or the Vauban fortifications; the first signs of inspiration and mysticism in the simplicity of each era of Romanesque and Baroque art; the first signs of creative audacity in the indelible mark of Fauvism and Cubism where the torch has been handed on to - and is now held high by - some outstanding contemporary visual artists.

Yes, everything that man has built and created here over hundreds of thousands of years constitutes the fabulous treasures of the Pyrénées-Orientales; treasures that are not jealously hidden but generously displayed for the pleasure of all to see.
